Museum track 24 at Leipzig Central Station

In the heart of Leipzig, on track 24 of the main station, there are several historical vehicle highlights from the DB Museum. The vehicles on display were in use for decades and played a key role in passenger and freight transportation. Today, they are maintained and kept in running order by a dedicated team of volunteers.

Whether commuter or train driver, stranded or long-distance traveler, the track is accessible to everyone at all times - come along and be inspired by the magic of these original vehicles.

Historic vehicles of the DB Museum

A total of six historic vehicles have found a permanent home on track 24. These include the E 04 01, the E 44 046 and the E 94 056, three well-known representatives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn's electric traction from before 1945. Early electric locomotives marked the beginning of a new era in railroad technology and set important milestones for efficiency and environmental protection.

Next to it is the SVT 137 225a/b, a lightweight high-speed railcar of the Hamburg design, better known as the “flying trains”. The railcars received their nickname due to their revolutionary speed and aerodynamic design at the time, which was reminiscent of the elegance and efficiency of an airplane. Today, the vehicle on the museum track is used for events, including as a special reading venue for the nationwide Reading Aloud Day.

With the steam locomotive 52 5448-7 of the Eisenbahnmuseum Bayerischer Bahnhof e.V., there is also a representative of steam traction.

Leipzig Central Station is more than just a transport hub - it is a historical landmark and a symbol of Leipzig's importance as a city of commerce and culture. Opened in 1915, it was once the largest terminus station in Europe and impresses with its monumental architecture. Today, the main station combines tradition with functionality: it serves as a hub for German and international rail traffic and is also a lively meeting place.

Volunteering at the museum

The maintenance of the vehicles and the organization of events on museum track 24 is only possible thanks to a great deal of voluntary support. If we have piqued your interest, you can find out more about volunteering at the DB Museum here.
