Electric Locomotive E 94 281

“The German Crocodile”

1955

A locomotive for generations

The first locomotives of the Class 94 entered service in 1940. They were designed to speed up freight train operations, particularly on steep gradients in southern Germany and Austria.

The E 94 is considered a successful design: a total of nearly 200 units were built. Both the Deutsche Bundesbahn and the GDR Reichsbahn continued to use them in heavy freight service after World War II. The Deutsche Bundesbahn had a total of 41 locomotives built by 1956, including the locomotive on display here. The Austrian Federal Railways also had several locomotives in their fleet. The last units of the “German Crocodile” were taken out of service in the 1990s.
