Under Pressure. The history of the train toilet

From April 26, 2024, the DB Museum in Nuremberg will be showing the special exhibition "Under Pressure. The history of the train toilet". Eight themed areas illustrate the development of the train toilet in Germany from its beginnings to the present day with over 150 exhibits.

Downpipe toilets have been used on trains for over a century. The toilet flushes directly onto the tracks - which is why their use is prohibited at train stations.

At the turn of the century, toilets differed according to carriage class and train type. While wood and ceramics were initially common, today plastics and stainless steel dominate as the materials of choice.

In the early 1970s, the German Federal Railways tested closed toilets with vacuum in its passenger coaches for the first time as a result of the emerging environmental protection ideas.

In October 2024, the DB Museum will once again be offering locomotive-hauled journeys on the historic Trans Europ Express (TEE) to the Max Bögl Group.
