A guest locomotive from the DB Museum in Koblenz

In conjunction with the current special exhibition “Tunnel,” the DB Museum in Nuremberg is currently displaying a locomotive designed for special tasks: The 714 015-5 was part of Deutsche Bahn’s rescue trains, which are intended for emergencies in railway tunnels.

Today, there are six tunnel rescue trains. They are primarily stationed on the older high-speed lines between Hanover and Würzburg and between Mannheim and Stuttgart. In the event of a fire or other emergency, they enter the tunnel to rescue passengers and provide care for the injured.

Each tunnel rescue train consists of two locomotives, two transport cars, an equipment car, a fire extinguishing agent car, and a medical car.

The 714 015-5 was created by converting a Class 212 locomotive. For its special mission, it was equipped with, among other things, a video camera and an infrared camera, additional spotlights, and a yellow flashing light. This allowed the crew to work in the tunnel even under poor visibility conditions.

In 2020, the locomotive was replaced by new rescue vehicles. It will remain on display in the outdoor area of the DB Museum in Nuremberg until the end of October 2026.
